Documentation Tables and records
Copy and paste rows
Copy cells out of the grid, paste rows in from Excel or Google Sheets, what a paste may add, its limits, and how to undo it.
The grid copies and pastes the way a spreadsheet does, so you can move rows between Sterodata and Excel or Google Sheets without a file. For a large file, or to check how each column will be read before anything is written, use Import records instead.
Copy
- Select what to copy: drag across cells, Shift-click to extend a block, click a column's header for the whole column, or tick rows to copy every column you can see.
- Press Ctrl+C (Cmd+C on a Mac). Press Ctrl+Shift+C to put the column names on the first line.
Each cell is copied as the grid shows it, and a message says how many rows and columns were copied. The copy holds the records on the page you are looking at: when you copy a whole column or every ticked row and the table has more records than the page, the message says so. A column's ⋮ menu also offers Copy column, except while the grid is grouped.
Paste
- Copy the rows in your spreadsheet.
- Click the cell where the top-left value should land.
- Press Ctrl+V (Cmd+V on a Mac).
Values fill the columns to the right and the rows below, in the order the grid shows its columns. Where the block reaches past the last column or the last record, Sterodata asks Grow this table? and says how many columns and rows it would add. Choose Add & Paste to go ahead. New columns are named Column 5, Column 6 and so on, and each takes the type its values fit.
When the table is still empty, Sterodata first asks whether the first row holds your column headers. Choose Use as column names to match each header to the field of that name, or to add a field for it, or No, it's data to paste every row as records.
Undo a paste
After a paste, a message says how many rows and columns were filled, with Undo. Undo, or Ctrl+Z, puts back the values that were overwritten, removes the records the paste added and removes the columns it added. It is offered for about 12 seconds, and only until you make another change to the table.
Limits
Sterodata refuses a paste, and changes nothing, when it would:
- overwrite more than 100 existing records;
- add more than 200 columns;
- bring the table past 10,000 records;
- reach rows below the page you are on while more pages follow. Go to the last page, or paste below the last record.
A paste goes into a table, not a view: in a Dynamic table, paste into the table it shows instead.
