Change an app after installing it

What you can change in an installed app, how to clear or bring back its sample rows, which changes affect later updates, and how to remove an app.

Everything an app makes is an ordinary table, view, page, form or role of your workspace. Change it as you change anything else: rename tables and fields, add fields, edit views, rebuild pages, publish them, and give roles to people. The app's page keeps track of what it made, under the names those things have now, under In this workspace.

Clear the sample rows

A table that holds an app's sample rows says so above its grid: Sample rows from the app, and how many of its rows came with it.

  1. Open one of the app's tables and choose Clear sample rows.
  2. Sterodata lists how many sample rows go, from which tables, and which stay and why.
  3. Choose Clear with the number of rows, for example Clear 40 rows.

The clear covers all the app's tables at once, and never deletes a row you added. Two kinds of sample rows stay:

  • a sample row somebody changed, in any column: it is yours now, and no longer counts as a sample;
  • a sample row your own rows use, such as a sample product on one of your order lines, and any sample row it points at. The list names what uses each one.

You need permission to delete rows in those tables. Publishing a page whose lists still show an app's sample rows warns you to clear them first, but does not stop you.

Bring sample rows back

An app's table with no rows at all reads No rows yet. When the app has sample rows for that table and you may add rows to it, it also offers Bring sample rows back, even if you installed the app without them. They come back one table at a time, as the installed version writes them, into the app's columns under the names those columns have now.

When a table's sample rows link to another table's, bring that table's back first; the message says which. Sample rows cannot come back if a table they link to is gone, or if a column they fill was deleted.

Changes that affect later updates

You can change anything, but some changes decide what a newer version of the app can do:

  • Renaming a table, view or page the app made. A newer version that still uses the app's name for it is not offered as an update. Your install keeps working as it is. Renaming it back lets the update be offered.
  • Changing a column the app made into another kind, such as a link into text, or a calculation into a number. The update is held back until you change it back. Changes among the plain kinds, such as text, number, currency, date and choice, don't count.
  • Editing an app's views, its layouts or its roles' permissions. An update sets them back to the app's.
  • Deleting a table, view or column the app made, or renaming one of its columns. An update makes it again under the app's name, empty, beside whatever you renamed.

See Update an installed app.

Remove an app

There is no uninstall. To remove an app, delete what it made yourself: the pages, forms, tables and views its page lists under In this workspace, pages and forms first, then views, then tables; and any role it made, in Settings › Users › Roles. Sterodata refuses to delete something another thing still uses, and names what uses it. The gallery still lists the app as installed afterwards, and does not offer to install it again.
