When an app can't be installed here
Each reason the app gallery gives for not installing an app in your workspace, and what to do about it.
Sterodata checks what an install needs before you press anything. When something stands in the way, the app's page says why, in red above Install, and the button cannot be pressed. Nothing in your workspace has changed. Deal with the cause, open the app's page again, and Install is back.
The app's card in the gallery is tagged Can't install here only when columns are made differently, the sixth reason below. The other reasons are said on the app's page alone.
A table, view or role already has one of its names
This workspace already has a table called “Products” that this app has no record of making. Rename it, then install. If an install of this app was cut off and left it behind, delete it instead.
The apps use plain names (Products, Clients, Accounts, Plots), and you may already have used one. An app never takes over something it did not make: it would add its columns and sample rows to your table, or give its views to your role's members. Names are compared regardless of capitals and accents, so products counts as Products.
- If you can open the table, choose Open followed by its name, for example Open Products, beside Install.
- Rename your table, view or role.
- Come back to the app's page and choose Install.
Delete it instead only if you know an earlier install of this same app was cut off and left it behind, which is rare: an install that fails in the ordinary way keeps a record of what it made (see the end of this page).
A page already has one of its names
This workspace already has a page called “Price list” that this app did not make. Rename it, then install.
An app's buttons open its pages by name, so it cannot share a name with one of yours. Rename your page in Pages, then install.
You can't add tables in this database
You can't add tables in this database. A workspace admin can give you access.
Installing adds tables to the workspace's built-in database, which needs that permission. Ask a workspace admin to install the app, or to give you the permission (see Access).
You can't add pages in this workspace
You can't add pages in this workspace. A workspace admin can give you access.
For an app with pages and forms. Its pages are made as drafts that only their editors can open, so you need permission to add pages, and to open and change them.
Its pages need access to a table you don't have
Its pages need access to “Offers” that you don't have. A workspace admin can give it to you.
Making a page asks the same permissions as building it yourself: a form needs to add rows to the tables it writes into, a list needs to read the table it shows. Since the app's tables don't exist yet, only a permission over all tables of the database covers them. In practice, ask a workspace admin to install the app.
Columns of the same names are made differently (Can't install here)
This workspace already has columns of the same names made differently (Plots.Variety), so this app cannot be installed here.
This happens when tables an earlier, unfinished install of the app made are still here, and one of their columns has since been changed into another kind: a link to another table turned into text, for example, or a calculation into a plain number. Changes among the plain kinds, such as text, number, currency, date and choice, don't count.
- Choose Open followed by the table's name, beside Install, to go to the table the message names first.
- Change the column back to the kind the app makes it, or rename it so the app can add its own.
- Install again.
If an install stops partway
If something fails while installing, a message says The app was not installed. and why. What the install had already made is kept as the app's own. The app still shows as not installed, and Install again finishes the job.
The second attempt does not offer Include sample rows, because the app's tables are already there. Once it has finished, each empty table of the app offers Bring sample rows back instead: see Change an app after installing it.
The same reasons can hold back an update of an installed app. See Update an installed app.
