Line items and several tables

Add a section of lines to a form, so one send writes an order and each of its lines; set limits on lines and on the total.

An order is one record with several lines: one row in Orders, and one row in Order items for each product. A form does the same with a section of lines. The person adds as many lines as they need, and one send writes the order and every line, linked to it.

Which table each answer goes to

A form writes one record into its own table, the heading of the outline. Each section of lines writes one record per line into its own table, which links to the form's table: Order items, through its link to Orders. The section's settings say it in words, such as "Adds one row to Order items for each line."

When the form has a question that finds or adds a customer by what they type, a new customer is added to the customers table too. See Linked records.

All of it is written together, in one step: the order, each line and any new customer go in, or nothing does. The Publish sheet sums it up under Writes: one row in Orders, and one per line in Order items, together.

Add a section of lines

  1. In the builder, choose Add in the outline.
  2. The menu lists each table that links to the form's table as a section of lines, with the link it goes through. Pick one.
  3. When no table links to the form's table yet, the menu offers Make a lines table for it instead. Give the new table a Name, choose where Products come from (one of your tables, or a new one), check its Fields (the link to the order, filled in when sent; the product, picked; a quantity, asked; a price copied from the product; an amount worked out by the table), and choose Make table.

From the builder, a form gets more tables only as sections of lines. A second section that writes a single record into another table cannot be added here.

The section's settings

Select the section's row in the outline:

  • Section title: what the form calls it, such as "Products".
  • Lines as: Auto, Table or Cards. A phone always shows a card per line.
  • What a line is: what each field of a line does. The link to the order is filled in by itself and never asked. The product is picked from your products table, with the same Only and Customers see as any list. A price can be copied from the product when the order is sent, and an amount worked out by the table.
  • The eye on the section's row takes the whole section off the form, or puts it back.

A price copied from the product is the price in your table when the order is sent, never a number the person's browser sent. If a price changes while someone has the form open, their send is refused with "One price changed since you opened the form", and they check it and send again.

Limits on lines and on the total

  • Lines: At least and At most, with what the customer reads when there are too few, such as "Add at least one product." A section takes at most 200 lines unless you set otherwise, and at most 1,000.
  • Total: tick Keep the total within limits, choose what to Add up (a number of the section, such as the amount), set At least or At most, and write the sentence, such as "Orders start at 500 lei."

Both are checked by the server on the lines and amounts it is about to store, not on a total the person's device worked out. While filling in, the person sees how far they are from a minimum.

What the person sees

The person adds a line with the section's add button, picks the product, and sets the quantity. On a computer the list of products opens under the button; on a phone, as a full-height sheet. Its + adds a product without closing the list, since an order is rarely one product, and products sent from that same device before come first, under "You ordered before". The Send bar at the foot of the form counts the lines and shows the total.
