Built-in exchange rates

Currency fields convert at the rates of the National Bank of Romania (BNR) or the European Central Bank (ECB), built in and kept current, or at rates you keep yourself.

When an amount is in one currency and a total is in another, Sterodata converts it at an exchange rate. The rates of two central banks are built in, so there is nothing to connect, no key to get and no table to keep.

SourceWhat it publishesHistory in Sterodata
BNR, National Bank of RomaniaHow many lei one unit of each currency costs.Every year since 2005.
ECB, European Central BankHow many units of each currency one euro buys.Every day since 4 January 1999.

Sterodata reads both banks every hour, so a rate is in shortly after the bank publishes it. Any date the bank published converts, whatever the year.

Choose where your rates come from

A workspace uses one source for all its conversions, as a company keeps its books against one source.

  1. Open Settings, General, and find Exchange rates.
  2. Pick BNR, ECB or Custom. Under a bank, the row says up to which date its rates are in, and for how many currencies.

A new workspace starts with the source that fits its locale: BNR for a Romanian workspace (ro-RO), the ECB for any other. After that it changes only when someone changes it here; changing the locale does not change it. Only a workspace admin can change it.

Custom rates

With Custom, the rates come from a table called Exchange rates that you fill: one row per date and currency, with the rate for one unit in the workspace's own currency, to six decimals. Type the rows, import them, or fill the table from a connection. Sterodata makes the table when the workspace first needs it. Going back to a bank leaves the table as it is.

Which rate a date gets

  • With the ECB, and with custom rates, an amount converts at the last rate on or before its date.
  • With BNR, it converts at the last rate published before its date, as BNR's rate for a day is the one it published the banking day before.
  • An amount dated on a day with no rate yet, such as today before the bank publishes, or a future date, converts at the latest rate there is until its own is in.
  • An amount in the field's own currency is not converted. An amount with no date, or in a currency or on a date the source has no rate for, shows as not converted yet and is left out of totals, which say so.
  • Amounts convert when they are read, and nothing converted is stored. A change of source shows in every amount the next time it is read.

While a period is locked, the source cannot be changed in a workspace that converts amounts: every converted amount of that period would change. Reopen the period first.

How a currency field picks the date it converts at is explained in Fields. The other workspace settings are in Settings.
