Documentation Automations

Create an automation

Make an automation under Settings, add its steps in order, choose what happens when a step fails, and save it.

You build an automation as a list: a trigger at the top, then steps that run one after another. A typical one reads a list from a connected API and writes it into a table.

Make one

  1. Open Settings and choose the Automations tab, then New automation. It is made at once, named Automation 1 (or the next free number), with a Manual trigger.
  2. Click the name at the top to rename it, and add a Description.
  3. Choose its trigger under Trigger type. See Triggers.
  4. Choose Add step, pick a step, and fill in its settings. Repeat for each step.
  5. Choose Save. Run stays off while there are unsaved changes.

The steps

StepWhat it does
HTTP readReads a resource of a connected API, every page of it. Pick the API endpoint and the Resource; both lists also let you add a new one.
HTTP read per rowFor each row an earlier read produced, calls another resource, and keeps the answers as separate rows or attaches them to each row.
Fetch relatedFor each row an earlier step produced, calls up to two operations of an API one after the other, and puts the result in a column, as data or as attached files.
Group byCollapses an earlier step's rows into one row per value of the columns you name, collecting the rest into a column.
Sink tableWrites an earlier step's rows into a table you pick, or a new one. On conflict decides how: Insert only, Upsert (merge by key) on the key field you name, or Replace (truncate + insert), which empties the table first. In a step's Type list it is called Write to table.
HTTP actionRuns one action of a connected API, such as creating an invoice. Its Parameters take fixed values or values from earlier steps.

Each step's settings

  • Name: how later steps refer to this step's output. Renaming a step updates the steps that use it.
  • On failure: Abort run stops the run there; Continue to next step carries on without this step's output.
  • The arrows move a step up or down; Remove step takes it out.

Other settings

  • Extended runtime: a run stops after 15 minutes unless this is ticked. Ticked, runs take longer to start and cost more, so leave it off unless a run has been cut short.
  • Pause and Activate, at the top: a paused automation is not started by its schedule. Save after switching.
  • To rename or delete an automation, use the menu beside its name in the side list.
